Evidence that the rate-limiting step for the biosynthesis of arachidonic acid in Mortierella alpina is at the level of the 18:3 to 20:3 elongase

Article Abstract:

Fatty acid synthesis is regulated separately from fatty acid elongation in the fungus Mortierella alpina,. Fatty acid desaturation and elongation still occur when the fungus is grown on simple fatty acids.

The role of malic enzyme in the regulation of lipid accumulation in filamentous fungi

Article Abstract:

The role of malic enzyme (ME) in regulating lipid accumulation was examined using two filamentous fungi, Mucor circinelloides and Mortierella alpina. The experiment resulted in the positive correlation between ME activity and lipid accumulation. This was verified by the restoration of ME activity in Mr. circinelloides within four hours after the addition of NH4+. The result indicates that decline in ME activity is due to the ME gene's down-regulation.
