Fluctuating asymmetry in tamarin (Saguinus) cranial morphology: intra- and interspecific comparisons between taxa with varying levels of genetic heterozygosity

Article Abstract:

Fluctuating asymmetry in insufficient to measure developmental homeostatis especially in endangered populations because the technique can only detect very large fluctuating asymmetry differences. Accurate determinations of heterozygosity are limited by a small sample, a lack of control populations and unavailability of repeat measures, making genetic variation difficult to determine. Three models of tamarin with varying degrees of heterozygosity are observed. Results show a negative relationship between fluctuating asymmetry and genetic heterozygosity.

Arbitrary primer PCR of dog DNA with estimates of average heterozygosity

Article Abstract:

DNA fingerprints capable of distinguishing different dog breeds can be obtained using arbitrary primer polymerase chain reaction (AP-PCR). The technique also provides genomic markers. AP-PCR detects polymorphisms among seven breeds of dogs, among the individuals of same breed or among the members of a single family. The fingerprint data from ten Belgian sheepdogs give an average heterozygosity value significantly lower than that obtained from beagles. Polymorphic bands are detected which are either always present or always absent in the Belgian dogs.

Computer program for calculating within-population variance heterozygosity

Article Abstract:

A computer software that calculates the within-population variance of average heterozygosity using a matrix variables is described. The analyzed loci are represented by the columns of the matrix while the individuals that have been genotyped for each locus within a given population is represented by the rows. The program can give the number of heterozygous individuals, the observed heterozygosity, variance and standard deviation for each locus, among others.
