Gene transfer by transduction in the marine environment

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the potential for bacteriophage-mediated gene transfer in the marine environment. Transduction systems were created using marine phage host isolates while transduction assays were carried out using marine bacterial isolates. Results reveal that a marine phage host isolate is capable of transferring an antibiotic-resistant plasmid among bacterial hosts. Findings, thus, indicate that transduction could be a critical component for horizontal gene transfer in the marine environment.

Relationships of bradyrhizobia from the legumes Apios americana and Desmodium glutinosum

Article Abstract:

Research is conducted on the genetic relationships of the root-nodule bacteria from three herbaceous legumes and on the extent of their nitrogen capacity fixation. Results indicate overlap among the bradyrhizobial symbionts from legumes Apios americana, Desmodium glutinosum and Amphicarpaea bracteata.

Case of localized recombination in 23S rRNA genes from divergent Bradyrhizobium lineages associated with neotropical legumes

Article Abstract:

A lateral transfer of ribosome genes is occurring in Bradyrhizobium spp. One species had a mosaic rRNA consisting of segments from B. japonicum and segments from B. elkanii.
