Genetic and posthatch parental influences on growth in pigeon squabs

Article Abstract:

The study of the effects of posthatch nest environment on squab growth conducted on 456 squabs, from 72 pairs of Silver King - White King crosses reared either by their genotypic parents or foster parents, shows that posthatch parental activities regarding feeding and caring for the young was 6.28%, 10.27%, 5.72% and 0% for the total variance in 7-days, 14 days, 21-days and 28 days weight, respectively. Parental activities accounted for 8.41%, 0%, 10.81% and 8.39% for the total variance in 0 to 7-day, 8 to 14-day, 15 to 21-day and 22 to 28 day gain periods respectively.

Group-structured genetic models in analyses of the population and behavioural ecology of Poiklothermic Vertebrates

Article Abstract:

The use of group-structured genetic models in population breeding studies of poikilothermic vertebrates is examined, in an attempt to demonstrate the benefits of such models.
