Identification and overexpression of ItnI, a novel gene which confers immunity to the two-component lantibiotic lacticin 3147

Article Abstract:

Results demonstrate that ItnI gene is part of the gene cluster ItnRIEF and its 116 amino acid protein alone can confer lacticin immunity. Data also indicate that under a nisin-inducible promoter, ItnI gene is overexpressed so it can be used as a food-grade selectable marker.

Each peptide of the two-component lantibiotic lacticin 3147 requires a separate modification enzyme for activity

Article Abstract:

The genes and enzymes involved in producing the lacticin 3147 lantibiotic are described. This lantibiotic produced by Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis DPC3147 produces ion-specific pores in the membrane of Gram-positive bacterial cells.

Generation of food-grade lactococcal starters which produce the lantibiotics lacticin 3147 and lacticin 481

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on transconjugant lactococcal starters producing lantibiotics lacticin 3147 and lacticin 481. Results demonstrate that these starters have been generated via bacteriocin-encoding plasmid conjugation.
