A new system for three-dimensional tracking of motile microorganisms

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on the three-dimensional tracking system with dark-field illumination. The use of the nonactinic near-infrared illumination is discussed.

Motility of Marichromatium gracile in response to light, oxyen, and sulfide

Article Abstract:

The purple sulfur bacterium Marichromatium gracile moves deeper into water during the day to avoid high oxygen levels. It usually forms a layer at the oxic-anoxic interface. At night, it can move up into micro-oxic regions.

Identification of "Candidatus Thioturbo danicus," a microaerophilic bacterium that builds conspicuous veils on sulfidic sediments

Article Abstract:

The molecular analysis of bacteria enriched under in situ-like conditions and mechanically isolated by micro-manipulation has showed that a hitherto-uncultivated microaerophilic bacterium thriving in oxygen-sulfide counter-gradients is affiliated with the epsilon-subdivision of the Proteobacteria. The whole-cell hybridization with newly designed specific oligonucleotide probes is used to confirm the affiliation and the bacterium belonging to the new genus received a provisional name 'Candidatus Thioturbo danicus'.
