Identification of Rhizobium spp. in peat-based inoculants by DNA hybridization and PCR and its application in inoculant quality control

Article Abstract:

DNA hybridization tests on peat inoculants give good results if the strains of bacteria being tested are unrelated. For closely related strains, the DNA tests have to be more species-specific. The PCR tests cannot determine the exact composition of the peat inoculant because the primers used are not species-specific. Although, the DNA and PCR tests can be used for quality control of the inoculants prepared commercially, they cannot take the place of plant infection tests.

Application of microautoradiography to the study of substrate uptake by filamentous microorganisms in activated sludge

Article Abstract:

Microbiological research shows that microautoradiography is helpful for substrate uptake studies of filamentous microorganisms in activated sludge. The technique measures labelled organic substrate uptake by filamentous microorganisms. Specific uptake patterns are observed within filamentous groups. Autoradiographic photographs of activated sludge samples are shown. Electron acceptors can be used to enhance the technique.
