Identification of mouse sperm SED1, a Bimotif EGF repeat and discoidin-domain protein involved in sperm-egg binding

Article Abstract:

Research identifies SED1 protein which is homologous to cell-matrix adhesive proteins and contain Notch-like epidermal growth factor repeats and discoidin/F5/8 type C domains. SED1 is localized to the sperm plasma membrane and mediates sperm binding to the egg zona pellucida. SED1 specifically binds to the unfertilized oocytes and not to the fertilized eggs.

The European Research Council on the brink

Article Abstract:

The European Research Council was created to fund basic scientific research throughout the European Union and might be in non-EU countries also. This agency faces the challenge of building a structure that is independent and transparent and should have a significant influence on science.

Molecular analysis of system N suggests novel physiological roles in nitrogen metabolism and synaptic transmission

Article Abstract:

Results demonstrate identification of an orphan protein representing the classical amino acid transport system N (SN1). The data indicate that SN1 mediates glutamine efflux and uptake associated with the nitrogen metabolism and is involved in the sodium ion and proton transoport.
