In vitro resistance of Burkholderia cepacia complex isolates to reactive oxygen species in relation to catalase and superoxide dismutase production

Article Abstract:

In vitro resistance of Burkholderia cepacia complex, made up of groups of genomovars that have been found to be important opportunistic pathogens in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, has been found to isolate to reactive oxygen species relative to catalase and superoxide dismutase production. Production of peroxidase, catalase, and SOD by isolates from the various B cepacia genomovars was studied. Production of the latter two was greatest in the late stationary phase in almost all isolates studied. Seven of 11 strains with high-level survival after hydrogen peroxide treatment in vitro, including all the genomovar III strains looked at, had a bifunctional catalase/peroxidase.

Identification and molecular analysis of cable pilus biosynthesis genes in Burkholderia cepacia

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on opportunistic respiratory pathogen Burkholderia cepacia. The authors describe the cloning and sequencing genes from a pilus gene cluster, and the results demonstrate that gene products are sufficient for pilus assembly on bacterial surface.

Intracellular survival of Burkholderia cepacia complex isolates in the presence of macrophage cell activation

Article Abstract:

Results demonstrate that Burkholderia cepacia and B. vietnamiensis, found in cystic fibrosis patients, can survive for 5 days in the presence of murine macrophages and may play a role in the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis infection.
