Integrin alpha8beta1 is critically important for epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during kidney morphogenesis

Article Abstract:

The role of integrin alpha8beta1 in the epithelialization of metanephric mesenchymal cells during kidney morphogenesis was analyzed in mice after the inactivation of alpha8beta1 receptor. Mice with targeted mutations of the integrin alpha8 gene exhibited deficient ureteric bud development and impaired metanephric mesenchyme epithelialization. Abnormal murine kidney morphogenesis due to the absence of integrin alpha8beta1 indicated the role of the integrin in epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during organogenesis.

Going the distance, or not, with neurotropin signals

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted on developing sympathetic neurons which established that Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), a member of the neurotropin (NT) family, activates TrkA receptors on axon terminals and signals retrograde to cell bodies to regulate survival and differentiation. The difference of NGF and NT-3 is explained as the ability of NGF to support survival and differentiation, but not NT-3, to induce internalization and retrograde transport of activated TrkA.

In the beginning: lessons from fertilization in mice and worms

Article Abstract:

This review discusses the current understanding about mammalian gamete interaction with respect to the early events of fertilization. Models are presented incorporating gamete interaction, the sperm interaction with the zona pellucida, and core features based on fertilization process in mice and worms.
