Interpretation of a BMP activity gradient in Drosophila embryos depends on synergistic signaling by two type I receptors, SAX and TKV

Article Abstract:

The synergy between two type I receptors, SAX and TKV, determines the cell fate specification of the dorsal embryos in Drosophila. These receptors act synergistically by mediating SCW and DPP graded BMP signaling activities. SCW acts through SAX while DPP and SCW act through TKV. In addition, SOG, an extracellular protein, blocks SCW signal. Experimental results offer a framework for understanding the interrelationship of these signaling components.

The Drosophila schnurri gene acts in the Dpp/TGFbeta signaling pathway and encodes a transcription factor homologous to the human MBP family

Article Abstract:

Cloning the schnurri (shn) gene responsible for zygotic embryonic lethal mutations revealed that is codes for a putative zinc finger transcription factor that is homologous to a family of mammalian DNA-binding proteins. Results also showed that the shn phenotype is similar to the zygotic mutant phenotype of two genes that are required for dpp signal transduction, tkv and punt, suggesting that shn also plays a role in dpp signaling.

Drosophila dpp signaling is mediated by the punt gene product: a dual ligand-binding type II receptor of the TGF-beta receptor family

Article Abstract:

Drosophila decapentaplegic (dpp) signaling is mediated by the punt gene product and the Drosophila punt gene encodes atr-II, a type II receptor that binds activin. Drosophila with punt mutations have characteristics similar to those with mutations in the sax, tkv and dpp genes. The punt gene product will bind bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP2) with tkv or sax, but not alone.
