Intraspecific variation in the use of nutrient reserves by breeding female Mallards

Article Abstract:

The intraspecific variation in the nutritional tactics of fowls was studied wuth respect to certain environmental factors. Female Mallards were colected from grassland habitats characterized by undulating topography with few trees. The fowls' ovaries were removed and placed in formalin before a subsequent chemicalanalysis. The remainder of the carcasses were then weighed and subjected to laboratory analysis. Results revealed that the fowls use of nutrient reserves varied little between habitats. However, a difference in the Mallards' fat and mineral use was observed between the collection sites.

The diets of neotropical trogons, motmots, barbets and toucans

Article Abstract:

The broad diet categories for neotropical trogons, motmots, barbets and toucans were evaluated. Label data for the four species was obtained from the bird collection of the Museum of National Science in Louisiana State University. The label data was used to determine whether the species are insectivorous, frugivorous, or mixed in diet. The results showed good agreementwith those obtained by microscopic analysis of the actual stomach contents of the same specimens.
