Katp, a novel catalase-peroxidase encoded by the large plasmid of enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli 0157:H7

Article Abstract:

The KatP gene which mediates the catalase-peroxidase activity of the enterhaemorrhagic Escherichia coli p0157 plasmid was sequenced to determine its molecular structure. The gene was located in the 9.7 kb SmaI deoxyribonucleic acid fragment. Nucleotide sequencing indicated the presence of peroxidase 1 and 2 motifs in the 736 amino acid polypeptide gene. Furthermore, open reading frames were also detected in the 2208 bp of the 81.8 kDa gene which is also homologous to bacterial bifunctional catalase-peroxidase genes.

The large plasmids of Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are highly variable genetic elements

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze whether plasmids of Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are a uniform genetic element present in STEC. Diarrhoeagenic E coli strains were examined using an espP-specific polymerase chain reaction. Results indicated differences in the espP genes of the STEC serotypes. Findings also showed that the plasmid of sorbitol-fermenting STEC 0157:H- did not have the espP and katP genes even though the genes were present in the plasmid of the non-sorbitol-fermenting STEC 0157:H7.

Analysis of the EHEC hly operon and its location in the physical map of the large plasmid of enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7

Article Abstract:

The pO157 plasmid from enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 was characterized at the molecular level. A restriction map was developed from seven restriction enzymes. The size of pO157 was found to be 93.6 kb and two additional genes were identified and designated as EHEC hlyB and EHEC hlyD. The hlyA, hlyB, hlyC and hlyD genes constitute a typical RTX determinant with the gene order CABD. An open reading frame was found adjacent to the EHEC hly operon.
