Mechanochemical interactions between striated muscle cells of jellyfish and grafted extracellular matrix can induce and inhibit DNA replication and transdifferentiation in vitro

Article Abstract:

The mechanochemical interactions between striated muscle cells of jellyfish and the adhering extracellular matrix were studied. Induced DNA replication and proteolytic activity followed by transdifferentiation into RF-amide-positive nerve cells were observed. Moreover, the inhibition of DNA replication and transdifferentiation was suppressed whenever tissues were allowed to form a monolayer of well-stretched cells. The results suggest the mechanochemical interactions play a role in activation and inhibition of DNA replication and transdifferentiation.
