Interspecific transfer of Streptomyces giant linear plasmids in sterile amended soil microcosms

Article Abstract:

Results support that gene transfer between streptomycetes species can occur through plasmids as demonstrated by the transfer of giant linear plasmids in these fungi.

Mercury resistance is encoded by transferable giant linear plasmids in two Chesapeake Bay Streptomyces strains

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the mercury resistance genes of Streptomyces strains CHR3 and CHR28 that are found on transferable giant linear plasmids. It was observed that both plasmids were transmissible to the chloramphenicol-resistant S. lividans. The finding that mercury resistance genes are encoded on transmissible linear plasmids indicate that horizontal gene transfer may take place in the sediment microbial population.

Hybridization analysis of Chesapeake Bay virioplankton

Article Abstract:

Nucleic acid probes and hybridization analysis were used in studying the abundance of specific viruses found in Chesapeake Bay water samples. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis was used in separating virioplanktons in the water samples and hybridized with nucleic acid probes specific to single viral strains or viral groups. Results reveal changes in the abundance of specific viruses were episodic. This finding imply viral infections influence clonal diversity within heterotrophic bacteria and phytoplankton communities.
