Mitochondria, oxidants, and aging

Article Abstract:

The various theories that agree and disagree with the free radical theory are reviewed and the relationship between mitochondrial metabolism, oxidant formation and the process of aging is investigated. The findings suggest that the free radical theory provides an explanation for the process of aging in a wide variety of species and the presence of many short-lived and long-lived organisms, which bring about changes in the mitochondrial metabolism, oxidant formation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and aging, thus revealing the possibility of a link between them.

The m-AAA protease defective in hereditary spastic paraplegia controls ribosome assembly in mitochondria

Article Abstract:

Inactivation of AAA protease caused pleiotropic phenotypes in various organisms, including respiratory deficiencies, mitochondrial morphology defects, and axonal degeneration in hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP). Findings revealed mitochondrial defects associated with m-AAA protease mutants and shed light on the mechanism of axonal degeneration in HSP.
