Mitochondrial DNA variation in the highly endangered cyprinid fish Anaecypris hispanica: importance for conservation

Article Abstract:

The importance for conservation of mitochondrial DNA variation in the highly endangered cyprinid fish Anaecypris hispanica has been studied. Samples from the Caia, Adila, Degebe, and Odeleite rivers showed haplotypes that differed by a large number of site differences. they may be indicative of population bottlenecks that have caused stochastic extinction of haplotypes. Populations from the Xevora, Carreiras, Chanca, Foupana and Vascao rivers had low nucleotide diversity, perhaps also showing genetic bottlenecks with later population expansion. Results suggest that the Foupana and the Odeleite populations and the remaining northern populations should be managed as three distinct Evolutionary Significant Units (ESU). In the northern ESU, four management units should be considered.

The effects of founding bottlenecks on genetic variation in the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) in North America

Article Abstract:

The influence of founding bottlenecks on genetic variation in the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) in North America is discussed, and the genetic variation is compared to the variation in the home range. Enzyme electrophoresis was used for the study. The effect of the founding bottleneck was in agreement with theoretical predictions and it appears that theoretical predictions of bottlenecks are valuable for allozyme data and apply under a variety of conditions. .

Genetic divergence and the mating system in the endangered and geographically restricted species, Lambertia orbifolia Gardner (Proteaceae)

Article Abstract:

The article discusses the effect of habitat fragmentation on the population size, genetic structure and the mating system of the relict plant species in south-west Australia. Genetic data to support the conservation of Lambertia orbifolia are presented.
