Molecular basis of sulfite oxidase deficiency from the structure of sulfite oxidase

Article Abstract:

The sulfite oxidase enzyme containing molybdenum, catalyzes the conversion of sulfite to sulfate, during the oxidative degradation of cysteine and methionine. Sulfite oxidase deficiency in humans often results in major neurological abnormalities and early death. The crystal structure of chicken live sulfite oxidase shows that each monomer of the enzyme comprises three domains, and four variants linked to sulfite oxidase deficiency have been identified.

Error-prone DNA polymerases: novel structures and the benefits of infidelity

Article Abstract:

The biological functions of the error-prone DNA polymerases indicate to their role in translesion DNA synthesis and/or base excision repair. Data suggest that the low-fidelity polymerases exhibit an open, solvent-accessible active site and are involved in the translesion synthesis of DNA base damage.

Death by deamination: a novel host restriction system for HIV-1

Article Abstract:

Research reveals that a human gene encoded cytidine deaminase attacks newly synthesized HIV-1 DNA thereby preventing the formation of functional proviruses. Data also point out that this host-mediated restriction is blocked by HIV-1 Vif gene leading to virus replication.
