Molecular mechanisms of endocytosis

Article Abstract:

The fifth European biannual conference on endocytosis was held on Sep 13-18, 1997 in San Feliu de Guixols, Costa Brava, Spain. A series of poster and oral presentations on endocytosis was included in the program for the meeting. Endocytosis is the process by which cells sample the external millieu to extract not only nutrients but information about the environment. To date, numerous proteins associated with endocytosis have been identified. The functions attributed to these proteins are discussed.

Cargo takes control of endocytosis

Article Abstract:

A molecular mechanism by which G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) that bind to cellular PDZ domain-containing proteins, such as the [beta]-adrenergic receptor, could delay dynamin-dependent internalization of a subset of clathrin-coated pits is described. Ligand binding to the EGF receptor not only targets the activated receptor to pre-existing clathrin-coated pits but might also stabilize the formation of new clathrin-coated pits by an unknown mechanism.

Ubiquitination of a yeast plasma membrane receptor signals its ligand-stimulated endocytosis

Article Abstract:

Ubiquitination and degradation of proteins in Saccharomyces cerevisiae proceeds when the alpha factor binds to the G protein-coupled plasma membrane receptor Ste2p. The binding stimulates a signal transduction pathway which activates endocytosis of the receptor-ligand complex. Ubiquitination signals the endocytosis to occur in the lysosome/vacuole, to the exclusion of endocytosis in the proteasome.
