New insertion sequences and a novel repeated sequence in the genome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv

Article Abstract:

The genome sequence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv consists of 56 loci with homology to insertion sequences. Novel insertion sequences belonging to the IS3, IS5, IS21, IS30, IS110, IS256 and ISL3 families have been identified in the genome sequence along with a new repeated sequence. Elements similar to insertion sequences in other actinomycetes were also determined, an indication of the movement of insertion sequences between related genera. These observations offer pertinent information on the possible role of insertion sequences and repetitive elements in the evolution of Mycobacterium tuberculosis genome sequence.

Gene arrangement and organization in an approximately 76 kb fragment encompassing the oriC region of the chromosome of Mycobacterium leprae

Article Abstract:

Nucleotide sequencing of the 75 627 bp segment of the Mycobacterium leprae chromosome with the oriC gene indicated the presence of a gene order that is similar to the replication origin region of prokaryotes. The 75 627 bp segment also contains gyrB, dnaA, dnaB and gidB genes which mediate deoxyribonucleotide metabolism, cell wall synthesis and cell division. Furthermore, the protein products of the open reading frames that are located in the region mediate the generation of serine/threonine protein kinases and protein phosphatase.

Physical mapping of Mycobacterium bovis BCG Pasteur reveals differences from the genome map of Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv and from M. bovis

Article Abstract:

The physical mapping of the chromosome of the Mycobacterium bovis (Mb)BCG Pasteur classical vaccine strain was conducted to determine the presence of segments that are different from the chromosomes of Mb and M. tuberculosis (Mt). The genomes of Mb BCG Pasteur and Mb exhibited colinearity due to the presence of extensively conserved genes and similar restriction fragments. The Mb BCG Pasteur chromosome also contains a restriction length polymorphism that is similar to the chromosome structure of Mb.
