Occurrence, diversity, and pathogenicity of halophilic Vibrio spp. and non-O1 Vibrio cholerae from estuarine waters along the Italian Adriatic coast

Article Abstract:

Significant concentrations of potentially pathogenic Vibrio spp strains were found to exist along the Italian Adriatic coast. This was evident in a study of the occurrence, diversity and pathogenicity of Vibrio spp and non-O1 Vibrio cholerae from estuarine waters along the Adriatic coast. Vibrio alginolyticus was the predominant strain, followed by Vibrio parahaemolyticus, non-O1 Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio vulnificus. The strains were classified into nine phenotypes with similarity levels of 75 to 97.5%.

Occurrence and relatedness of vancomycin-resistant enterococcci in animals, humans, and the environment in different European regions

Article Abstract:

The occurrence of the vancomycin-resistant enterococcci (VRE) in geographical regions in Europe is compared and the relatedness between VRE strains from different regions and habitats is studied with 2,580 samples that were collected from humans, animals, and the environment. It is concluded that animal-associated VRE probably reflect the former use of avoparcin in animal, whereas VRE in human-associated samples mat be result of antibiotic use in hospitals.

Evaluation of a scanner-assissted colorimetric MIC method for susceptibility testing of gram-negative fermentative bacteria

Article Abstract:

A description of a scanner assisted colorimetric MIC method and an assessment of the ScanMIC method, which can be used in testing the susceptibility of gram-negative fermentative bacteria, is provided. Reliable results were derived after using ScanMIC method, which also saved costs and did not require initial investments.
