Of bears, frogs, meat, mice and men: Complexity of factors affecting skeletal muscle mass and fat

Article Abstract:

Insight into the molecular mechanisms controlling muscle growth and atrophy or hypertrophy and fat deposition in skeletal muscles is presented. This approach, combined with exploitation of high-throughput molecular and protein analysis technology, the abundance of new molecules and mutant organisms generated by models such as zebrafish and Drosophila, and the emergent field of microRNAs, would provide new information into factors controlling muscle hypertrophy/atrophy and myogenesis/adipogenesis.

The centipede Strigamia maritima: What it can tell us about the development and evolution of segmentation

Article Abstract:

Strigamia maritima turns out to be a tractable system both at the ecological level of investigating differences in mean segment number between populations and at the molecular level of studying the expression patterns of developmental genes. A study reports findings of a double-segmented periodicity in the expression of two Strigamia segmentation genes and its possible implications for the understanding of arthropod segmentation mechanisms in general.
