On-line visualization of the competitive behavior of antagonistic bacteria

Article Abstract:

Leuconostoc mesenteroides Y105 can inhibit the growth of Listeria monocytogenes due to the secretion of mesentericin Y105. A real-time visualization of individual populations within a mixed culture of L. mesenteroides and L. monocytogenes wasconducted using flow cytometry. The initial coculture contained a large excess of the listeriae. Results showed that the relative numbers of Leuconostoc increased after two hours, and predominated the culture after four hours. The results demonstrate the efficacy of flow cytometry in monitoring the competitive behavior of antagonistic bacteria.

Diversity and antagonistic potential of bacteria associated with bryophytes from nutrient-poor habitats of the Baltic Sea coast

Article Abstract:

The analysis of bacteria associated with three bryophyte species, Trotula ruralis, Aulacomnium palustre and Sphagnum rubellum that represent typical moss species of three nutrient-poor plant communities at the southern Baltic Sea coast in Germany is described. Results show that bryophyte-associated bacteria are important potential sources of antifungal antibiotics and some of them are interesting candidates for biological control agents against plant pathogens.

Divercin V41, a new bacteriocin with two disulphide bonds produced by Carnobacterium divergens V41: Primary structure and genomic organization

Article Abstract:

The lactic acid bacterium Carnobacterium divergens V41, isolated from fish viscera, produces divercin V41, a bacteriocin. Divercin V41 shows high homologies with pediocin PA-1 and enterocin A. A chromosomal fragment containing dvnA, the divercin V41 structural gene, was cloned and sequenced, and results suggest that divercin V41 is synthesized as a pre-bacteriocin of 66 amino acids.
