Optical fiber-based in situ spectroscopy of pigmented single colonies

Article Abstract:

Rapid optical fiber-based spectroscopy accurately records the reflection and absorption spectra of single bacterial colonies. The fiber-optic spectroradiometer with diode array detection is capable of assessing at least 500 colonies per day. The accuracy of spectral measurements permits the determination of small changes in peak maxima. Reliable reflectance spectra are available within a range of 450-820 nm, and a transmission spectral range of 400-900 nm produces reliable peak intensities and absorption maxima.

Development of a laboratory-scale leaching plant for metal extraction from fly ash by Thiobacillus strains

Article Abstract:

A semicontinuous laboratory-scale leaching plant (LSLP) is described. A mixture of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans oxidizing reduce metal compounds and Thiobacillus thiooxidans generating sulfuric acid was utilized in the performance of the leaching experiments. The three-step LSLP experiment suggest the practicability of biotic fly ash leaching despite the presence of saline and strongly alkaline material. A scaled-up version of the LSLP seems to be technically feasible in metal-manufacturing industries.

In situ determination of sulfide turnover rates in a meromictic alpine lake

Article Abstract:

Results show that sulfate-reducing bacteria produce sulfide under anoxic conditions whereas anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria oxidize sulfide. Data show that sulfide turnover rates can be measured in situ using a push-pull method.
