P elements and P-M characteristics in natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster in the southernmost islands of Japan and in Taiwan

Article Abstract:

P elements and P-M characteristics have been studied in natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster in Japan and Taiwan in the most southern islands. In the study 126 isofemale lines were examined from seven islands. The P-M characteristics of each population had not changed greatly in the most recent 15 years. The genomic P element profiles are very similar, mostly having full-size P and KP elements. No clear relationship between phenotype and genomic P element composition was seen.

Male-killing selfish cytoplasmic element causes sex-ratio distortion in Drosophila melanogaster

Article Abstract:

Sex ratio distortion brought on by a male-killing agent has been found to affect Drosophila melanogaster. The trait was accidentally discovered in a collection of flies from Brazil and was found to be inherited maternally, to be infectious and to be cytoplasmic. The skewed sex ratio is the reult of pre-hatching male mortality. Males do not transmit the trait to progeny.

A Tirant insertion in the alcohol dehydrogenase locus of Drosophila melanogaster

Article Abstract:

A Tirant insertion in the alcohol dehydrogenase locus of Drosophila melanogaster, a fly, is discussed. Tirant appears to affect transcription from the distal promoter, and possible mechanisms are covered.
