Parallel rise and fall of melanic peppered moth in America and Britain

Article Abstract:

The frequency of alleles producing melanins in the peppered moth, Biston betularia, decreased in UK and southeastern Michigan in the 1990s in response to a decrease in air pollution. The air quality in Michigan, as measured by the levels of atmospheric sulfur dioxide and suspended particulates, shows an improvement similar to that in UK. However, the pale phenotypes of the moth returned in UK much before the light colored lichens appeared. This indicates that the pale phenotype is independent of lichen presence.

Genetic Screening for Prey in the Gut Contents from a Giant Squid (Architeuthis sp.)

Article Abstract:

The polymerase chain reaction-based technique was used to identify prey species for the giant squid. Findings show fish prey to be Macrurorus novaezelandiae; evidence of cannibalism among giant squid was also found.

Melanic Moth Frequencies in Yorkshire, an Old English Industrial Hot Spot

Article Abstract:

Populations of three selected moth species found in Leeds, England, are examined, with declines noted in the postindustrial era. It is posited that selective predation may account for the declines.
