Patterns of parental provisioning by Eastern Phoebes

Article Abstract:

The patterns of parental provisioning among male and female Eastern Phoebes were studied. Eastern Phoebes were mist-netted and individually marked with colored plastic and metal numbered leg bands. The birds per-nestling feeding rates were then evaluated using non-parametric Wilcoxon matched-pair signed rank tests and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Results showed that the median total number of feeding trips per nestling does not differ between broods of male and female Eastern Phoebes.

Paternity and the relatedness of helpers in the cooperatively breeding bell miner

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the percentage of broods of Bell Miner nestlings using multi-locus DNA fingerprinting. The study was conducted within the Coranderrk Reserve at Healesville, Victoria. Blood was collected from each bird in 75 mu-l nonheparnized capillary tubes by branchial venipuncture. Results indicated that Bell Miners do not mate indiscriminately and that the majority of their helpers are close relatives of the breeding pair.

Difficulties storing and preserving tyrant flycatcher blood samples used for genetic analyses

Article Abstract:

Blood samples of Eastern Phoebes were stored in a lysis buffer which has successfully preserved blood samples of many other species. Samples of nestling blood did not reliably produce the quantity and quality of DNA required for multi-locus DNA fingerprinting. Also usable DNA could not be extracted from samples from Eastern Kingbird nestlings, although usable DNA was obtained from blood of Least Flycatcher nestlings, stored for over a year.
