Persistence of Streptococcus mutans in stationary-phase batch cultures and biofilms

Article Abstract:

Characterization of the survival of Streptococcus mutants UA159 in both batch cultures and biofilms is discussed. Findings reveal that the presence of mucin prolongs the survival of S. mutans in sugar-starved biofilms and it is suggested that further characterization of the effect of mucin on S. mutans persistence may lead to a better understanding of the biological state of the bacteria in a mature biofilm.

Evidence that accumulation of mutants in a biofilm reflects natural selection rather than stress-induced adaptive mutation

Article Abstract:

The deletion mutants of dental pathogen Streptococcus mutants were studied for the virulence. The accumulation of the virulent strains in the biofilm was quantitatively determined to be occurring due to natural selection.
