Persistence of nontuberculous mycobacteria in a drinking water system after addition of filtration treatment

Article Abstract:

A study was carried out to find the impact of ozonation and filtration treatment performed on the unfiltered surface drinking water system on the occurrence of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) found in the water and use the molecular method to portray the NTM isolates. It was found that in spite of addition of ozonation and filtration to the drinking water system, the NTM continued to colonize in the water, indicating that the cold-water outlets should be regarded as the probable source of infection to NTM in humans.

Mycobacteria in water and loose deposits of drinking water distribution systems in Finland

Article Abstract:

A study covering sixteen drinking water distribution systems in eight localities of Finland was conducted, for examining the occurrence and species of mycobacteria in water and loose deposits of drinking water, which was collected from old system pipelines before and after their mechanical cleaning and for determining the relationship between the occurrence of mycobacteria and deposit characteristics. Drinking water could be considered as a source for newly discovered mycobacterial species.
