Phenotypic and genotypic characteristics and epidemiological significance of ctx(super +) strains of Vibrio cholerae isolated from seafood in Malaysia

Article Abstract:

Malaysian seafood-borne toxigenic strains like ctx(super +) strains of Vibrio cholerae and other toxigenic strains isolated in Malaysia are examined for determining their phenotypic and genotypic characteristics and understanding their epidemiological significance. Phenotypic and genetic differences exist in the toxigenic strains of V. cholerae that were isolated from Malaysian seafood and the strains could be separated into four groups of separate origins, which was shown by the results of PFGE-dendrogram analysis, antibiograms and the possession of the plasmid named toxin-linked plasmid (pTLC) sequence.

Detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in the beef marketed in Malaysia

Article Abstract:

An investigation of whether Esscherichia coli O157:H7 is distributed in retailed beef in Malaysia found diverse antibiograms and profiles of the arbitrarily primed polymerase chain reaction of 12 strains of E. coli O157:H7. These strains were isolated from nine of 25 beef samples purchased from Malaysian retail outlets. They yielded Shiga toxin 2 with or without Shiga toxin 1 and had the eae gene and a 60-MDa plasmid. These results indicate that the strains may have diverse origins.

Phenotypic and genotypic biotyping of environmental strains of Vibrio cholerae non-01 isolated in Italy

Article Abstract:

Vibrio cholerae non-01 strains collected from Italy were examined through molecular biotyping, antibiotic susceptibility testing and biochemical and serological assays. A significant heterogeneity at the genomic level was observed and serogrouping classification indicated a high variability of the examined strains. Results also reveal that the strains do not produce toxins similar to cholera.
