Phenotypic properties and microbial diversity of methanogenic granules from a full-scale upflow anaerobic sludge bed reactor treating brewery wastewater

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the microbial compositions of the different granules was conducted by molecular microbiological techniques like cloning, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The aim of this analysis was to gain insight into the microbial composition and structure of the different types of granules in upflow anaerobic sludge bed (USAB) reactor from an industrial brewery.

Population dynamics of propionate-oxidizing bacteria under methanogenic and sulfidogenic conditions in anaerobic granular sludge

Article Abstract:

Sulfidogenic anaerobic granular sludge from aerobic sludge beds contains mainly the propionate-oxidizing bacteria Desulfobulbus sp. while methanogenic sludge contains mainly SYN7 bacteria. The Desulfobulbus content decreases with culturing in methanogenic sludge and increases in sulfidogenic sludge. SYN7 shows an opposite population dynamic. Desulfobulbus forms an outer thick layer on sulfidogenic sludge below which are microcolonies of methanogens.

Eukaryotic community distribution and its relationship to water physicochemical parameters in an extreme acidic environment, Rio Tinto (Southwestern Spain)

Article Abstract:

The relationship between water physicochemical parameters and eukaryotic benthic composition was studied in Rio Tinto. It was found that Rio Tinto has unique characteristics that keep it apart from other acidic freshwater environments, such as extension, extreme conditions and highly unexpected eukaryotic diversity.
