Population density and mating pattern in western larch

Article Abstract:

The presence of barriers to pollen movement can override the effects of population density in the western larch, Larix occidentalis Nutt. Allozyme variation analysis of the seed tissues provides information on two populations of this conifer at two locations in British Columbia. At one location, population density and outcrossing rate are positively correlated. The correlation is negative at the second location. Locations with high population density show high correlated mating. The results suggest that peculiarities of the species affect the relation between mating system and population density.

Mating system in Pterocarpus macrocarpus Kurz in Thailand

Article Abstract:

Pterocarpus macrocarpus Kurz, an important timber species of Southeast Asia, seems to be mainly an outcrossing species, according to research undertaken among 11 natural populations representing different forest habitats in Thailand. Single-locus estimates of outcrossing rates were variable in all populations. Outcrossing rates were lower in eastern populations, where there was a larger proportion of trees with outcrossing rates less than 90%. There also seemed to be greater variation of individual tree outcrossing rates in eastern populations than in western populations.

Mating system and phenology of Ceiba pentandra (Bombacaceae) in central Panama

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted on the flowering and mating behavior of Ceiba pentranda, popularly known as the kapok or silk-cotton tree. An 84-hectare plot of primary rain forest located in central Panama was chosen as the study site. Horizontal starch gel electrophoresis and the Ritland mixed mating program were used to obtain data. Results showed that the Ceiba pentranda species had a mixed mating system consisting of selfing and outcrossing. The absence of apomixis was noted from the data.
