Population structure of microbial communities associated with two deep, anaerobic, alkaline aquifers

Article Abstract:

Microbial communities of two deep alkaline, anaerobic aquifers were investigated by rRNA-based studies. Both aquifers are situated within the Columbia River Basalt Group in south-central Washington, and sulfidogenesis and methanogenesis characterize the two formations. Bacteria dominated both communities, making up 92.0 and 64.4% of the total rRNA from the two formations. Eucarya accounted for 5.5 and 14.4% and Archae comprised 1.8 and 2.5%.

Flow cytometry-assisted cloning of specific sequence motifs from complex 16S rRNA gene libraries

Article Abstract:

A flow cytometry method termed as fluorescence-activated cell sorting-assisted cloning is developed for rapid screening and recovery of cloned DNA containing common sequence motifs. This method is used to recover sequences affiliated with a unique lineage within the Bacteroidetes not abundant in a clone library of environmental 16S rRNA genes.
