Phylogenetic and morphological diversity of cyanobacteria in soil desert crusts from the Colorado Plateau

Article Abstract:

Researchers found different cyanobacterial communities in desert soil depending on the type of soil. The cyanobacterial ecology was similar in sandy, silt, and shale crusts, but was different in gypsum crusts.

PCR primers to amplify 16S rRNA genes from cyanobacteria

Article Abstract:

A new oligonucleotide primer using polymerase chain reaction has been developed to amplify the 16S rRNA gene of cyanobacteria. Studying the bacteria from cultured samples poses problems because these samples can have some missing morphological characteristics and cultured bacterial strains can sometimes be misidentified. Scientists prefer to study bacterial samples that have been collected from the environment. Using the new primer is very advantageous because natural samples can be studied especially if used in conjunction with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis.

Quantifying microbial diversity: morphotypes, 16S rRNA genes, and carotenoids of oxygenic phototrophs in microbial mats

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the diversity of oxygenic phototrophic microorganisms using three cultivation-independent methods. Carotenoid molecular structures, rRNA gene sequences and unique cell and colony morphologies were used to define the classes for grouping the elements. Results based on studies of eight different mat communities revealed the underlying diversity of oxygenic phototrophic microorganisms.
