Role of potassium tellurite and brain heart infusion in expression of the hemolytic phenotype of Listeria spp. on agar plates

Article Abstract:

The effect of brain heart infusion agar (BHIA) and potassium (PT) tellurite on the hemolytic phenotype of Listeria spp. was determined. Two strains, L. monocytogenes and L. ivanovii were grown on plates of BHIA and Columbia agar base (CAB). Results showed that both strains manifested bigger zones of hemolysis on BHIA than on (CAB). In addition, addition of P increased the hemolytic zones of L. monocytogenes which was attributed to the enhancement of the cytolytic effect of listeriolysin O. However, PT decreased the hemolysis of L. ivanovii because it inhibited the production of sphingomyelinase.

Development of a PCR assay for detection of Yersinia ruckeri in tissues of inoculated and naturally infected trout

Article Abstract:

A new polymerase chain reaction assay based on the selective amplification of a DNA fragment from the Yersinia ruckeri 16S RNA gene has been developed. The assay is used in detecting the presence of Y. ruckeri in tissues of inoculated and naturally infected trout. Results reveal that the assay is as fast and as reliable as the conventional culture method for investigating the trout contamination by the bacterium. Its sensitivity is 60 to 65 bacterial cells per PCR tube but decreases by 10 to 20 cells by hybridization with a nonradioactive probe.

Cloning and analysis of the L-lactate utilization genes from Streptococcus iniae

Article Abstract:

Analysis and cloning of the L-lactate utilization genes from Streptococcus iniae are discussed. To test for presence of lactic oxidase gene in the genera in which lactate oxidase activity has been seen and in a phylogenetically related bacterium, Southern blotting and PCR analyses were used.
