S elements: a family of Tc1-like transposons in the genome of Drosophila melanogaster

Article Abstract:

Two groups of transposons defined by the Tc1 element, designated HB1 and Bari-1, have been characterized in Drosophila melanogaster. Both elements have 27-bp inverted terminal repeats, but none of these show signs of being transpositionally active. In this study, new transposable elements called the S elements were identified in D. melanogaster. These elements vary in size and nucleotide sequence. Molecular analysis showed that S elements are found throughout the chromosomes, but occupies certain sites in the euchromatin and heterochromatin.

Genetic instability in Drosophila melanogaster mediated by hobo transposableelements

Article Abstract:

Seven of eight recessive lethal mutations on unstable X chromosome derivatives of Drosophila melanogaster are associated with hobo transposable elements. This was revealed by hybridization and genomic Southern analyses. Six mutations involve deletions while the other is an inversion mutation. hobo transposable elements were found in the breakpoints of the seven mutations. Regional chromosomal instability may have been brought about by the gross rearrangement resulting from the interaction among elements previously separated.

Repression of hybrid dysgenesis in Drosophila melanogaster by individual naturally occurring P elements

Article Abstract:

The repression of two aspects of hybrid dysgenesis, gonadal dysgenesis and mutability of a double-P element-insertion allele of the singed locus, by three distinct types of incomplete transposable P elements isolated from a natural strain of Drosophila melanogaster called Sexi was analyzed. Results showed that each isolated P element had its own characteristic repression and suppression abilities which may be mediated by P-encoded polypeptides or by antisense P RNAs.
