Serpentine proteins slither into the Wingless and Hedgehog fields

Article Abstract:

Sophisticated functional models of the Wingless (Wg) and Hedgehog (Hh) proteins' molecular signaling mechanisms have been developed as a result of recent research developments on Wg and Hh signaling. Combining the information gathered via the genetic and the biochemical approaches yielded these developments. Future research efforts should test the validity of predictions made from the genetics after biochemical analysis. Biochemical interactions identified between specific molecules should likewise be validated.

The torso receptor tyrosine kinase can activate raf in a ras-independent pathway

Article Abstract:

The receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) torso stimulates the D-Raf without the presence of Ras1. The RTK expresses transcription factors for tailless and huckebein. The activity of D-Raf is tested without the exchange factor Son of sevenless (Sos) and the adaptor protein drk (Grb2). It is also tested by the phenotypic mutation of D-Raf that binds Ras1 to D-Raf. RTK signal pathways exist from membrane to nucleus in both vertebrates and invertebrates.

marelle acts downstream of the Drosophila HOP/JAK kinase and encodes a protein similar to the mammalian STATs

Article Abstract:

The Drosophila signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) protein is encoded by a putative gene, designated marelle (mrl), which exhibits mutant phenotypes identical to mutations in the Drosophila Hopscotch/JAK kinase. Genetic experiments showed that mrl is activated by the Hopscotch protein for the regulation of transcription of target genes in the JAK/STAT pathway during cytokine binding.
