Sex-linked inheritance of fumarate hydratase alleles in natricine snakes

Article Abstract:

Fumarate hydratase (FUMH) alleles in natricine snakes are carried on the Z chromosome and their inheritance occurs in a sex-linked manner. Organisms having ZW sex chromosomes inherit the FUMH alleles. Agar overlay staining techniques are used to visualize FUMH genotypes. The analysis of allozymic variations in garter and water snakes indicate that FUMH heterozygotes are absent in females, though they are present in males. Similarity in the staining intensity of FUMH reveals that dosage compensation occurs in these snakes.

Family and population effects on disease resistance in a reptile

Article Abstract:

Research demonstrates the influence of genetic (family) effects on pathogen resistance with heritable variaion among natural populations. The study discusses patterns of viral eye disease in Swedish common lizards, representing reptiles. Data do not identify any causative agents linking disease risk to maternal/interfollicular transfer of pathogen.

Promiscuity in sand lizards (Lacerta agilis) and Adder Snakes (Vipera berus): Causes and consequences

Article Abstract:

Research into female promiscuity among the adder snake and Swedish sand lizard has revealed links between off-spring viability and the number of partners recorded. Links between success in sperm competition and mate acquisition were also recorded among males.
