Short beak: A new autosomal recessive semilethal mutation in Japanese quail

Article Abstract:

Unusual chicks of Japanese quail were found to have reduced beaks and shanks, a new semilethal mutation which has been named short beak (SBK). It was found that most of the SBK mutants died at the late embryonic stage, and of the chicks that hatched, most died at about three days old. Some of the SBK individuals reach sexual maturity and are able to reproduce. The SBK mutation was found to be controlled by an autosomal recessive gene which is not allelic to a previously reported stumpy-limb gene.

Clench: a new autosomal recessive mutation in Japanese quail

Article Abstract:

The clench (CL) morphological mutation has been detected in the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). CL mutants rigidly clench their toes in both legs, resulting into a human fist-like appearance in the distal ends of the legs. Nevertheless, the CL mutants were normal in fertility, hatchability and post-natal viability. Genetic analysis indicated that the CL mutation is an autosomal recessive with 100% penetrance.

New findings in the stumpy-limb mutation of Japanese quail

Article Abstract:

A study of the stumpy-limb (SL) mutant of Japanese quail reveals that the mutant is partially active in a changed genetic background. An autosomal recessive gene accounts for the SL mutation. The individuals having this mutation are fertile and attain sexual maturity, which is a very unusual phenomenon. There are no variations in oogenesis and spermatogenesis in the gonads of mutant quails.
