Single-locus complementary sex determination absent in Heterospilus prosopidis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)

Article Abstract:

The sex determination in Heterospilus prosopidis Viereck, a parasitoid from a relatively primitive subfamily having species with and without complementary sex determination (CSD) is investigated. Single-locus CSD as a sex determination mechanism in this species could be ruled out, by comparing sex ratio and mortality patterns produced by inbred and outbred females.

Single-locus sex determination in the parasitoid wasp Cotesia glomerata (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)

Article Abstract:

Study was conducted to investigate the presence of single-locus complementary sex determination (sl-CSD) through inbreeding experiment, cytological examination and microsatellite analysis. It provides the first solid evidence for the presence of sl-CSD as a sex-determining mechanism in the braconid genus Cotesia.

The article discusses about the different situations that may reduce the sex determination load in Costesia vestalis. The selection for adaptations to reduce diploid male production in natural populations is found likely to be strong.
