Sorting out genes that regulate epithelial and neuronal polarity

Article Abstract:

Independent research has simultaneously established that PDZ protein motifs mediate targeting of diverse proteins to synaptic sites. PDZ domains do not recognize the tyrosine-based or dileucine motifs identified for basolateral targeting in epithelial cells, but research into vulval cell differentiation in C. elegans shows that PDZ domains do mediate basolateral targeting. Current evidence does not definitively establish a role for PDZ domain interactions in postsynaptic targeting of GLR-1.

Epithelial M cells: gateways for mucosal infection and immunization

Article Abstract:

The mucosal surfaces of the gastrointestinal, respiratory and urogenital tracts are lined by epithelia that protect the mucosa from foreign antigens and microbial pathogens. Helping protect the mucosa from infection are protective secretory antibodies. A unique epithelial cell type called M cell transports antigens across the epithelial barrier, provoking a reaction from the mucosal immune system.

Cloning and crystal structure of hematopoietic prostaglandin D synthase

Article Abstract:

Hematopoietic prostaglandin (PG) D synthase is the main enzyme in D and J prostanoids in the immune system and mast cells. cDNA for the rat enzyme was isolated and the recombinant enzyme was crystallized, to determine the three-dimensional structure. The enzyme is a sigma class gluthathione s-transferase (GST) from vertebrates and has a prominent cleft as the active site.
