Specification of the anteroposterior neural axis through synergistic interaction of the Wnt signaling cascade with noggin and follistatin

Article Abstract:

The role of the neural-inducing factors noggin and follistatin in the nervous system was examined using the expression of Xwnt-3a in the neural ectoderm in Xenopus embryos. Results showed that Xwnt-3a interacts with noggin and follistatin to elevate the expression of posterior neural genes. Polymerase chain reaction techniques showed that an intracellular protein, beta-catenin, mimics the activity of Xwnt-3a. These results suggest that neural patterning in the nervous system relies on the synergism between a Wnt signaling pathway and neural-inducing factors.

Expression of wnt10a in the central nervous system of developing zebrafish

Article Abstract:

Researchers used a polymerase chain reaction-derived clone with sequence homology to partial-length shark and salamander Wnt-10a to search a zebrafish cDNA library, resulting in a cDNA encoding a full-length Wnt polypeptide. wnt10a transcripts are limited to differentiating brain areas, with expression initially emerging diffusely in the floor of the hindbrain ventricle and progressing anteriorly to the mid- and forebrain. The results indicate the existence of various functions for wnt 10a in the regionalization of the brain.

Nicking of rat spermatid and spermatozoa DNA: possible involvement of DNA topoisomerase II

Article Abstract:

Epididymal sperm with high salt-dithiothreitol was extracted to ascertain whether endogenous nicks existed in mature sperm, but were unobtainable because of protamine-DNA interactions. Nick translation was performed in the absence or presence of DNase I. DNA topoisomerase II (topo II) is active in elongating spermatids and could be related to the DNA changes occurring during spermatogenesis.
