Statistical method for estimating the effective population size in Pacific salmon

Article Abstract:

A method for estimating the effective population size in Pacific salmon without computer simulation is presented. This is an innovation on a recent technique which takes into account the unusual natural history of the species in its estimation. However, this requires the computation of a parameter b which requires the use of computer simulation. The new method does away with the need for estimates of b prior to population estimation. It has been translated into a BASIC-language program which is also presented.

Phenotypic and genetic architecture of juvenile morphometry in chinook salmon

Article Abstract:

Chinook salmon were mated in a half-sib/full-sib breeding design to determine genetic and environmental components of morphometric variation. Morphometric traits exhibited substantial additive genetic variation and correlated genetically and phenotypically. Strong environmental effects on body shape were also detected.

The salmon pattern mutation in captive colonies of Boa constrictor in the United States is examined. The inheritance mode seems to be autosomal incomplete dominance.
