Streptococcus mutans ffh, a gene encoding a homologue of the 54 kDa subunit of the signal recognition particle, is involved in resistance to acid stress

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the ability of Streptococcus mutans to tolerate rapid declines in plaque pH by isolating and partially characterization Tn917 mutants of S. mutans strain JH1005. Sequence analysis was carried out to examine the transposon insertion in AS17 in the intergenic area of a two-gene locus called sat for secretion and acid tolerance. Results indicated that Pfh may be involved in the maintenance of a functional membrane protein composition during adaptation of S. mutans.

Lactic acid excretion by Streptococcus mutans

Article Abstract:

Previous research has failed to tackle the mechanism of lactic acid secretion in the known ondopathogen, Streptococcus mutans. To remedy this problem, the transmembrane movement of radiolabelled lactate in de-energized S. mutans cells is monitored. Lactate in glyolysing cells is also measured. It is shown that lactate leaves cells as lactic acid in an electroneutral, energy-independent and carrier-mediated process.

Multiple stress responses in Streptococcus mutans and the induction of general and stress-specific proteins

Article Abstract:

Results reveal that Streptococcus mutans produces number of stress-specific proteins in response to stress conditions of pH, salt, heat, oxidation and starvation. Data indicate synthesis of at least 6 proteins under all 5 stress conditions.
