Attachment of Escherichia coli O157:H7 to the surfaces and internal structures of apples as detected by confocal scanning laser microscopy

Article Abstract:

A pathogenic strain of E. coli called O157:H7 can infiltrate the tissues of fruits such as apples and thereby resist all de-contamination of the surface of the fruit. This was demonstrated by researchers who used confocal scanning laser microscopy and the green fluorescent protein to detect the bacterium inside apples.

PCR detection of Salmonella enterica serotype Montevideo in and on raw tomatoes using primers derived from hilA

Article Abstract:

A PCR primer derived from the hilA regulator of Salmonella invasive genes can be used to detect Salmonella in or on fresh produce. Detection limits as low as 10(super 0) CFU/ml could be achieved.

Survival of Salmonellae on and in tomato plants from the time of inoculation at flowering and early stages of fruit development through fruit ripening

Article Abstract:

Salmonella can attach to tomato flowers and persist while the fruit develops and ripens. Some strains were still isolated from tomatoes 49 days after inoculation of the flowers.
