Lactococcin 972, a bacteriocin that inhibits septum formation in lactococci

Article Abstract:

Results demonstrate inhibition of septum formation or invagination are the primary effect of antimicrobial agent lactococcin 972 in susceptible lactococci bacteria. Data also show that the lactococcin deforms the cells eventually leading to cell death.

Lactococcin 972: a homodimeric lactococcal bacteriocin whose primary target is not the plasma membrane

Article Abstract:

Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis IPLA 972 was found to produce a bacteriocin which had a bactericidal effect on sensitive lactococci. Maximum production of lactococcin 972 was reached during the late-exponential phase of growth. The bacteriocinogenic activity was affected by heat, operated in the pH range of 4.0 to 9.0 and was only slightly affected by proteases. Purification of the bacteriocin produced a single polypeptide of 7.5 kDa.

Synthesis of lactococcin 972, a bacteriocin produced by Lactococcus lactis IPLA 972, depends on the expression of a plasmid-encoded bicistronic operon

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to identify and characterize the genes encoding bacteriocin protein in a lactic acid bacterial species. Results show that the protein is synthesized in the exponential and late-stationary-phase cells by one of the two genes in the plasmid encoded operon.
