Telomere shortening and apoptosis in telomerase-inhibited human tumor cells

Article Abstract:

Telomere shortening and apoptosis are discussed as seen in telomerase-inhibited human tumor cells. The role of telomerase activity in proliferation of human tumor and immortal cells has been looked at using inhibition of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) function. Stable cell lines were generated in two telomerase-positive human cell lines to look at effects of long-term expression of the dominant-negative mutants on tumor cells.

Loss of Werner syndrome protein function promotes aberrant mitotic recombination

Article Abstract:

Werner syndrome (WRN) protein function loss has been found to promote aberrant mitotic recombination. WRN cell lines show a marked reduction in cell proliferation following mitotic recombination and generate few viable gene conversion-type recombinants. WRN has a role in mitotic recombination. Mitotic arrest, gene rearrangement or cell death may result from recombination.

Nuclear translocation controlled by alternatively spliced isoforms inactivates the QUAKING apoptotic inducer

Article Abstract:

Nuclear translocation controlled by alternatively spliced isoforms has been found to inactivate the QUAKING apoptotic inducer. It is shown that only one QKI isoform, QKI-7, can induce apoptosis in fibroblasts and primary rat oligodendrocytes. Findings suggest nuclear translocation is a novel mechanism of inactivating apoptotic inducers.
