Temperature-sensitive mutations demonstrate roles for yeast fibrillarin in pre-rRNA processing, pre-rRNA methylation, and ribosome assembly

Article Abstract:

Temperature-sensitive lethal point mutations were generated in the NOP1 yeast gene, which codes for a small nucleolar (sno) RNA-associated protein homologous to fibrillarin. Analysis of the mutations' effects on ribosome synthesis showed that NOP1 is involved in the cleavage of pre-rRNAs, methylation and pseudouuridylation of the rRNAs and assembly of the rRNAs with ribosomal proteins. It is proposed that NOP1 is required for pre-rRNA to adopt the correct conformation in order to undergo these various steps in ribosome synthesis.

RNA processing marches on

Article Abstract:

This review is a summary of the meetings on "Regulation of Messenger RNA Processing" held in Madrid from 2-4 October 2000. The role of RNA processing at the posttranscriptional level comprises of multifarious aspects of developmental stages including sex determination, apoptosis, maturation of immune response, and tissue-specific gene expression.

Giving Meaning to movement

Article Abstract:

This review examines the evidence that support movement of plant transcription factors between plant cells. The mechanism is discussed with reference to SHORTROOT protein, which illustrates the signaling pathway for positional information transfer between root cell layers.
