Temporal changes in allele frequency, genetic variation and inbreeding depression in small populations of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata

Article Abstract:

The guppy, Poecilia reticulata, has been studied for temporal changes in allele frequency, genetic variation and inbreeding depression in small populations. Results indicate temporal changes in the allele frequencies can give an estimation of the amount of inbreeding depression during successive generations in small populations.

Sex ratio distortion and severe inbreeding depression in the gypsy moth Lymantria dispar L. in Hokkaido, Japan

Article Abstract:

Gypsy moth Lymantria dispar L. sex ratio distortion and severe inbreeding depression are discussed based on specimens from eight egg masses collected in a forest in Hokkaido, Japan, and later hatched, then crossed. An abnormal female that produced only female progeny had been found in the area. The progeny produced only females with egg hatch rates near 50% and all-female matrilines. The next field generation had an estimated 9.1% abnormal females. Severe inbreeding depression was seen in egg hatch rates in confirmation of maternal inheritance with cost of inbreeding estimated at 0.395. Inbreeding avoidance by the host as an advantage of a male-killing factor is apparently not applicable to this moth.

The contribution of male-sterility mutations to inbreeding depression in Mimulus guttatus

Article Abstract:

Male-sterility mutations and inbreeding depression in Mimulus guttatus, common yellow monkey flower, in a large annual wild Oregon population in the Western Cascades are discussed. Findings of the study, which measured six fitness components, indicate most of the inbreeding depression for male fertility would not be purged in a short time with moderate inbreeding.
