Temporal regulation of Drosophila imaginal disc morphogenesis: a heirarchy of primary and secondary 20-hydroxyecdysone-responsive loci

Article Abstract:

The temporal features of the 20-hydroxyecdysone-responsive expression of two members of the set of genes encoding inducible membrane-bound polysomal transcripts (IMP-genes), IMP-E1 and IMP-L1, in imaginal discs cultured in vitro were examined. It was demonstrated that IMP-E1 is a primary response locus that can be induced in the absence of protein synthesis, while IMP-L1 is a secondary response locus whose induction is dependent upon ongoing protein synthesis. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the sequential temporal expression of steroid hormone-responsive genes in imaginal discs is essential to the morphogenesis of the epithelium.

Drosophila ovary morphogenesis: analysis of terminal filament formation and identification of a gene required for this process

Article Abstract:

The development of structures was studied with oogenesis in the ovarioles.The bric a brac (bab) gene is necessary for the formation of the terminal filaments present at the tip of the 20 parallel ovarioles which constitute the ovary in adult Drosophila. A mutation in bab causes defective terminal filament formation and incomplete or missing ovarioles are seen in the mutant females. In normal females the terminal filaments are formed during the second part of the third instar stage and progress from the medial to the lateral end of the ovary with the number of filaments in a stack increases gradually.

A nuclear GFP that marks nuclei in living Drosophila embryos: maternal supply overcomes a delay in the appearance of zygotic fluorescence

Article Abstract:

A transgenic Drosophila line expressing a nuclear green fluorescent fusion protein (GFP) is described that facilitates study of morphogenesis, cell movement, and mitosis in living embryos. GFP thus proves to be an excellent marker of expression in stable gene products. However, the long delay between zygotic expression and the acquisition of fluorescence means that it does not function well as a reporter for the dynamic zygotic gene expression in the early stages of the Drosophila embryos.
